The Do’s and Dont’s
After a Disaster
Do
Contact your insurance company immediately to file a proper claim. You will then be assigned an adjuster from your insurance company. The adjuster will help you step by step with the process of finding temporary living and meeting other immediate needs.
Do
wait for emergency service fire department and police to release the scene before entering your home or commercial building.
Do
make arrangements to protect your property from further damage or theft. You will want to board up broken windows or doors, providing temporary power and drying down the building to prevent additional water damage or mold.
Do
take with you any valuables such as jewelry, cash, credit cards etc. if your home is uninhabitable.
Do
keep all receipts for additional living expenses related to your fire/flood. Including hotel, food purchases etc.
Do Not
enter the property if it has sustained heavy fire damage unless it has been inspected and deemed safe to reenter.
Do Not
disturb the origin of the fire. Your Insurance company will want to determine the cause of the fire and origin.
Do Not
throw away anything damaged by the fire/flood. If you do not have documentation of your loss, you may not be compensated for it.
